How Do I Get My Dog to Stop Jumping Up For a Reward?

Kate Basedow, LVT

If you dog is jumping up on you each time you offer her a reward, it may be time to revist some basic training.

First, start by making sure you always give your rewards low, when your dog has all four paws on the ground. If needed you can drop or toss the reward to condition your dog to not expect the treat to be on your body.

If you are working on loose leash walking and your dog jumps up to “demand” a reward, keep walking and ignore her. She can only have the reward when all four feet are on the ground. You can also ask her to sit or lie down before delivering the reward.

If she tends to jump up every time you stop moving, start asking her to sit just before you stop. Praise the sit calmly, and give your wait or stay cue as you deliver the treat.
